Workshop Gender cluster: National Civil Society Workshop in Sierra Leone

On 10 and 11 March, International Alert will host two local workshops in Bo and Makeni, Sierra Leone, in partnership with Women’s Partnership for Justice and Peace (WPJP) and Grassroots Empowerment for Self-Reliance (GEMS). Following the International Colloquium on Women’s Leadership, Empowerment, Peace and Security held in Monrovia, International Alert and the Coalition on UNSCR 1325 in Sierra Leone will be hosting a national workshop on 13 March to explore the themes of the Colloquium in relation to Sierra Leone. Workshop Gender cluster: Local Civil Society Workshops in Sierra Leone

On 10 and 11 March 2009, International Alert hosted two local workshops in Bo and Makeni, Sierra Leone, in partnership with Women’s Partnership for Justice and Peace (WPJP) and Grassroots Empowerment for Self-Reliance (GEMS). The workshops combined sensitisation on UNSCR 1325 and discussion of public perceptions of security. Each workshop began with presentations on UNSCR 1325 and the Justice and Security Sector Reform (JSSR) process in Sierra Leone. Workshops then moved into group discussions to identify perceptions of security and the efficacy of the JSSR process. MORE>>


Workshop Gender: Bujumbura, Burundi on 2 March – 6 March, 2009

The workshop was organised by International Alert in cooperation with Dushirahamwe on the topic of Gender and Security Sector Reform (SSR). Amongst the participants were high level officers from the Burundian army; representatives from the Burundian police corps; representatives from a wide variety of civil society organisations and also representatives from the Dutch military police stationed in Bujumbura. Workshop Gender cluster: Workshop to Enhance Civil Society Participation in the International Colloquium

A one-day workshop was conducted by International Alert as part of the Initiative for Peacebuilding, funded by the European Commission, to encourage greater participation of civil society actors, particularly women, in the International Colloquium on Women’s Leadership, Empowerment, Peace and Security, held 7-8 March 2009 in Monrovia. Gathering over 30 members of the NGO community from cross Liberia, this workshop discussed Colloquium themes and reached consensus on key advocacy messages to be raised by participants at the Colloquium. The format of the workshop included overview presentations by experts, small group discussions, and plenary sessions. MORE>>
